Springtime in Central Cali

Well, spring has sprung!    For the first mid-April in many years we are actually having a real spring…..we don’t normally have much of a “spring”…..I know I’ve said it before, and I’m certain I’ll say it again, but here in my area we really only have 2 full seasons…..fog and hot (aka “winter” (sort of…we don’t get very cold here) and summer (this is where we make up for our mild winters….we get VERY VERY HOT, if you like the dog days of summer, you should visit us anytime between May and mid-late November).  This year, we are blessed, blessed, BLESSED to have a true spring!!!!   It is in the mid 60s-low 70s every day, cold nights and cool mornings, perfectly warmed days….LOVE this weather!    And because of the absolutely PERFECT weather, the kids and I spent a while outside working in the yards yesterday.

Our backyard has been neglected the past couple of summers.  I really want to enjoy our yard and beautiful patio area again this year, and I’m REALLY hoping to get some gardens planted….the backyard, I dream of herbs, flowers, and some edibles like lettuce, etc.  In the front will be my bigger garden….tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, etc.

Anyhow, yesterday the kids and I worked outside for a while, it was GLORIOUS and felt good to spend time outside doing things that I enjoy, but don’t spend NEARLY enough time doing!   For the past several years, I’ve left all of the yardwork, gardening, etc to the “menfolk”…..it was great being out there yesterday working hard and getting things looking just the way I want them.   Still LOTS and LOTS to do, but I made a decent dent yesterday 🙂  I didn’t get any “before” pictures, but will for sure post “after” pictures once it’s all back in shape 🙂

In addition to the nice weather and being able to work outside, we are also being blessed by the springtime produce.  I haven’t been to the farmer’s market for too long, but it is strawberry season, which means that when I go this weekend, there will also be fava beans, artichokes, asparagus, spring onions, spring garlic, small and sweet cucumbers….I can’t wait!!!!!!   And in a few week’s time we’ll be in cherry season.  And then it will be summer….I LOVE the taste of summer! 🙂

What is springtime like where you live?  What do you enjoy about this time of year?
