This morning my honey and I are enjoying some quiet time outside before the sun came up and as the sun is rising above the trees and the houses in our quiet neighborhood. Last night our two oldest daughters had a friend spend the night (she’s staying the whole weekend), and Kennedy (R’s dog) didn’t care for our young friend upon their first meeting, so Kennedy slept in R’s room, and the girls all slept in the house. Well, that meant that this morning when Kennedy woke up, she couldn’t come into the house like she normally does. So I took her for a nice long walk, then when I got back my love and our other two little doggy friends were all in the backyard. So Kennedy and I joined them in the backyard 🙂 It has been WONDERFUL hearing the birds sing (something I have really missed from the past 8 years of living in “the city”……we just didn’t hear a lot of birds, or the crickets and other country or suburban sounds…..I missed that! And now get to enjoy it again….so blessed! 🙂 Anyhow, I decided to take full advantage of the cool morning and the sounds of nature and dig into God’s Word.
Today’s “Our Daily Bread” reading took me to Colossians 3:12-17. This particular passage of scripture is one that is very familiar to me….today it took a slightly different meaning in my heart though. The two verses that really stood out to me are Col 3:16-17
Colossians 3:16-17 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdome, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
This past few years for me have really taught me (through some circumstances in a former church that we were in) that the Word of God is all that matters. The Bible was written and presented to God’s people as a stand alone document, it didn’t come with dictionaries, commentaries, Bible scholars, etc attached to it, so our primary focus needs to be on THE BIBLE and the other “supporting documents” are just that supporting documents….and they are tools but shouldn’t be held in the same regard as God’s Word. I try to keep this in mind when talking with others, teaching, etc. I have stopped seeking information from books and too many commentaries, because God really impressed on me in September of 2010 that His Word is all that we need! Right around that same time, I started praying Col 3:17 daily…. “Whatever I do, in word or deed, I do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ”. The other scripture that I started praying daily around that time was Psalms 19:14 “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight. O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer” Yep, God has been really working on me for the past 2-3 years to REALLY REALLY REALLY keep my focus on Him! 🙂
