Well, this past week gas prices hit a number we never thought we’d REALLY see…..$4.05 per gallon at the CHEAP places…most places are $4.20 per gallon. Last year when $4 per gallon prices were being talked about, I can remember several conversations with friends and family and all of us saying “Oh, those types of prices will never be seen by our generation…..the government will drill domestically before they let our economy get THAT bad!” Well, guess what? We’re LIVING those prices now, and is our government even talking about drilling domestically? Not that I’ve heard! Not only are our gas prices going up, but our food prices….geesh!!!! In the past two months we’ve had to raise our gasoline budget by 25% and our food budget by 15%, and we are still just BARELY staying within those budgets. I know that some of our food prices haven’t seen significant rises, but the ones that I have seen have been HUGE….like my wheat….my wheat, spelt, kamut, and brown rices have all seen 70-120% increases in the past 6 months. I have seen a 50% increase in price in regular store bought milk. It’s ALMOST as cheap to buy the organic raw milk that is locally produced…..unfortunately, most of my family doesn’t like the taste of it. Dried beans have seen a 40-60% increase in price in the past year…..ridiculous! My husband’s pay hasn’t gone up more than 2% in the past year. God is good though, and we are still able to put some money into savings each month, although not as much as we’d like.
What are gas prices in your area? How much is a gallon of milk? What about wheat prices (or a cheap loaf of bread…you know, the one that’s mostly air, and just a year ago cost about .70 per loaf?)? How is this affecting your family? Have you made changes in your spending habits? Have you made changes in your eating habits? What about vacations or day trips, have you re-evaluated those considering the price of fuel?
Inquiring minds want to know 🙂 Would LOVE to hear how the current recession (yes, I’ll use the word! because that is reality in our country, whether you want to believe it or not, we are in a recession right now!) is affecting your family and friends?
I’ll write more about the affects that our family is seeing later today…..
