Cooking beans, part 1

A few weeks ago I wrote in one of my posts that I would write up a tutorial on cooking dry beans. I forgot to take pictures of each step that time around, but I remembered today.

Step 1. Open package of beans (I know this is obvious, but I know that my children will be using these tutorials as well, so I need to get REALLY basic for them :))

Step 2: Rinse and sort beans (sort the clumps of dirt, the split and broken beans, and any stones out of the remainder of the beans)

Step 3:

Place dry beans in bottom of large soup pan. Cover the beans with at least 3 inches of cold, clean, filtered water.

Step 4:  Place pan aside, cover with tight fitting lid and let stand to soak for 8-12 hours.

Tomorrow, I will post the remaining directions on how to turn these hard little dried beans into wonderfully nutritious and delicious red beans.
